Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a more intensive form of individual therapy in which clients attend sessions 3–5 times per week for several years.

In this type of psychoanalytic therapy, patients may lie on a couch or other comfortable surface (though not always required) and work with a trained psychoanalyst to uncover and explore areas of mental life that are not readily accessible to the conscious mind. The analyst pays close attention to action patterns, non-verbal communication, and relational dynamics—often identifying interpersonal patterns that emerge between analyst and client during treatment.

Through this process, psychoanalysis connects current struggles and relationship patterns to earlier life experiences, helping clients understand the unconscious roots of their symptoms and behaviors. Unlike short-term therapy focused primarily on symptom relief, psychoanalytic therapy emphasizes uncovering and transforming deeper unconscious dynamics. While psychoanalysis requires significant commitment, time, and resources, it can lead to profound and lasting psychological growth, greater self-understanding, and emotional well-being.

Couples Counseling and Family Counseling

Sometimes, therapy is most effective when working with both partners together rather than focusing on one individual.

Couples counseling, also known as marriage therapy or relationship counseling, is designed to help partners improve communication, strengthen connection, and navigate challenges in their relationship. Sessions are typically weekly and often focus on identifying and shifting unhelpful communication patterns, developing healthier interpersonal skills, and learning to express needs and expectations more clearly.

Couples counseling can also support partners in making important decisions about their relationship, such as staying together, separating, or moving forward after a breakup. While many couples work with a therapist for a few weeks to several months, the duration depends on each couple’s needs and goals. Whether you are dating, engaged, married, or in a long-term partnership, couples therapy in NYC provides a supportive space to rebuild trust, reduce conflict, and foster deeper understanding.

Building your story through therapy

At CoreStory Therapy, we believe that both listening and telling stories are powerful tools for healing. In therapy, listening is essential.

Many clients who come to us for help with depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, stress management, identity exploration, or life transitions often find themselves stuck in a single “problem story.” Through compassionate, attentive listening, we help uncover alternative narratives that can ease suffering, reduce anxiety, and bring new perspectives to light.

Careful, attuned listening also reveals the deeper patterns, relationship dynamics, and personal strengths that shape your life, creating a foundation for growth and resilience.

But listening is, as they say, “only half the story.” Sharing your story in a supportive therapeutic space can be transformative. Even if you feel like you don’t have one, narrative therapy offers the tools and guidance to help you discover, voice, and re-author your story for healing and self-discovery.

Psychodynamic Therapy

In psychodynamic psychotherapy, clients typically attend 45-minute therapy sessions once or twice per week.

During these sessions, we explore areas of concern such as problematic symptoms, relationship challenges, and underlying emotional causes. By integrating coping skills, communication strategies, and psychoeducational interventions, psychodynamic therapy helps clients gain deeper insight into their internal processes and interpersonal patterns. This increased self-awareness supports meaningful change, improved relationships, and long-term emotional well-being.
